How to find two-way radio frequency

So you’ve bought your new two-way radio and don’t know how to find and set the frequency to match your needs? We’ve written this article to help you do that in the easiest way possible.

Cell phones are so popular and common nowadays that one might think, why invest in any devices like radios other than for recreational purposes. Hold on! They have other purposes of fulfilling.

Imagine you are at your workplace, in a basement, or in areas with low signal range, or you are at a hike or countryside with no signals at all. Would you leave your work unattended or your recreational time spoiled due to the unavailability of signals? This is where two-way radios jump in like a Ginny at your service. In this article, I have got all the solutions to your problems.

Here you go!

The frequency modes:

There are two types of frequencies.

  • UHF is the abbreviation of ultra-high frequency. In this mode, your voice is transmitted at a frequency as high as 400 to 512 MHz. However, at this frequency, the wavelength shortens to 1 to 5 feet.
  • VHF is the abbreviation of very high frequency. At this frequency, your voice is transmitted with 130 to 175 MHz. But with the lower frequency, you get a bonus of greater wavelength. In VHF, wavelength measures up to 10 meters.

This is general trade between the frequency and the wavelength—the higher frequency partners with a lower wavelength and vice versa. Moreover, if you will place your radio in a high place, its range will increase substantially.

Determine where you want to use your radio:

Your first step while setting the frequency is to determine where you are going to use your radio. If you are going to communicate in a small radius but a noisy place with less curvature of Earth, then UHF mode is suitable. This mode works best when you are in close range with the ones you are communicating with.

If your communication needs to be transmitted in a wider radius with more Earth curvature, you need to switch on the VHF mode. This mode works best when you are hiking or working in field areas.

Adjusting UHF mode:

Normally the frequency pointer will be at a leveled position. To turn on UHF mode, turn the UHF control knob until it reaches above the balanced position. At this point, the VHF reading will be lesser.

Adjusting VHF mode:

To adjust VHF mode, simply turn the VHF control knob until it achieves higher reading than UHF. At this point, you see that reading for UHF mode will be lesser.

Two-way radios are designed to make use of both the frequency waves, so you have accessibility and better voice quality. Don’t worry if you notice the dominance of your unpicked wavelength, as it is also part of the game to provide you a better experience.

It looks a little bit difficult at the start to set up the frequency modes. At the outset, you might even face voice distortion or communication breakdown. Once you pick the correct frequency levels, all these problems will disappear.

Q: Is it possible to trace down two-way radio?

ANS: It is tough to trace them down. That is why it is so much popular among security forces.

Q: How far can two-way radio communicate effectively?

ANS: Most companies claim to cover a 10-mile radius, but in reality, a consumer’s two-way radio works at its best within a 1-2 mile radius.
