What is FASTag?

In October 2017, India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways implemented FASTag, a radio frequency identification technology (RFID). This decision was made after considering several potential annoyances for individual drivers as well as the country as a whole. According to estimates cited in a Times of India article, toll booth plazas in India leak roughly Rs. 12000 crore every year. Fuel wastage and human resource weariness at toll plazas are two of the most significant contributors to such losses. While financial loss is the most pressing problem, another impact, namely air pollution, goes unnoticed. India is one of the most polluted countries in the world, with more than 14 cities, including the national capital, Delhi, having extremely high levels of air pollution. In this aspect, toll plazas are a major contribution to India’s rising levels of air pollution. As a result, reducing such levels was one of the goals of FASTag implementation in India.

How does it work?

  1.  Whenever a vehicle passes through the Toll Plaza’s Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane, the Toll Plaza system captures the FASTag details (Tag ID, Vehicle class, TID, and so on) and sends them to the acquiring bank for processing.
  2. To confirm the label information, the gaining bank will present a solicitation to the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) Mapper.
  3. After the Tag ID has been authenticated, the NETC Mapper will respond with information such as Tag Status, Vehicle Class, and VRN, among other things. If the Tag ID isn’t found in NETC Mapper, it will be reported as unregistered.
  4. After the NETC Mapper validates the Tag ID, the acquirer host calculates the applicable toll fare and sends a debit request to the NETC system.
  5. The debit request will be forwarded to the appropriate issuer bank, who will debit the customer’s account.
  6. The linked tag holder account will now be debited, and the tag holder will receive an SMS alert.

The NETC system receives a response message from the Issuer host. The agreement will be considered.

  1. The NETC system will send the response to the acquirer host if it does not arrive within the specified TAT.
  2. Finally, the acquiring host will communicate with the relevant toll plaza system.
