Studying Chemistry for the JEE Main

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency and was formerly known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).  It is a standardized computer-based test for students wishing to gain admission in B.Arch, B. Planning, B.E., and B.Tech programs. JEE- Main consists of two papers. Candidates can choose to appear for both of the papers or any one of them. The test would usually be conducted twice a year.  However, from 2021, the test will be conducted four times a year in February, March, April, and May. This will give multiple opportunities for candidates to improve upon their scores if they wish to do so.  Besides English and Hindi, the test will be held in 11 other languages.

The JEE Main is the most important entrance exam for students aspiring to be engineers in the future. With their scores on the JEE Main, candidates may also gain entry into esteemed IITs and NITs. JEE Main is based on class 11 and 12 syllabus and tests physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Now that we’ve looked at what the JEE Main is all about, let’s look into how you can effectively prepare for the chemistry section.

Be well versed with the topics

The curriculum for the JEE Main is divided into three sections namely physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. In order to effectively prepare for JEE Main, students need to know the syllabus of each section well. You should also know the structure of JEE Main as well as the topic-wise weightage. You should also analyze the syllabus carefully and chalk out the areas you think will require more of your time.  Planning your exam preparation according to the topic-wise weightage is an efficient way to tackle the JEE-Main. This does not mean that students shouldn’t go through the low-weightage topics. It simply means that students should concentrate more on the concepts that have a higher likelihood of appearing in the exam.

Limit your study resources

You may think that referring to multiple textbooks will get you a better score on the test. However, many times, referring to multiple textbooks can lead to confusion. In the end, you don’t know what you have studied from which book and it’s all a big mess. To prevent this, candidates should use a few good resources and this will be much more effective in their exam preparation. The primary resource for studying chemistry for the JEE Main is the NCERT textbooks. JEE main toppers recommend using NCERT textbooks as these books explain the basics very well. It is also much easier to revise with these textbooks as a summary is provided at the end of each chapter. Students can also use an additional textbook if they feel the need to. But that’s it. Using more than two may result in you wasting time juggling between different textbooks.

Candidates can also use JEE Main Chemistry Chapter Wise Important Questions. This is an extremely valuable learning resource that students can use in their exam preparation. It covers all the crucial concepts from the three sections. It is organized in a chapter-wise format and also includes solutions. It is crafted by experts in the field and is available for free. Students have to simply download the pdf from the internet. These questions are drafted after carefully investigating the earlier questions papers and the topic-wise weightage. As a result, there is a great possibility that these questions might appear in the exam.

Make your own notes

Many students may feel that writing down notes for each chapter is a waste of valuable time. However, making notes is a great way to prepare for examinations and is an invaluable resource when it comes to revision. Ensure that your notes are extensive, organized, and comprehensible so that it adds to your learning.

Note-taking is useful for many reasons. Firstly, you can use your notes for revision. Revising the vast JEE portion can be stressful, but with your notes, it becomes a lot more manageable. You can review your notes after a study session and check whether you’re able to remember the concepts. Secondly, when you make notes you are forced to write stuff down. Writing equations and formulas will help you master them faster. Research has also shown writing things down improves recollections as well as understanding. You can organize your notes chapter-wise in a notebook. You can also make use of different color pens and highlighters to make your notes look more interesting.

Make practicing chemistry a part of your day

Like almost anything, chemistry requires practice. You can make a daily practice schedule and stick to it. This will help you manage your time efficiently. Give enough time to each topic, this will ensure that you finish the syllabus as well as practice regularly.

Simply looking at the textbook and following along with the problems is not enough, students should try solving problems, work through formulas and equations. You can also solve questions from NEET chemistry important questions. Try solving the questions and if you’re unable to get the answer, you can look through the solution and then, try to solve it by yourself. You can also find similar problems and give those a try. Giving enough time to chemistry every day will increase your confidence level when you finally have to face it on test day.

Make time to solve questions papers

Solving previous year’s JEE Main question papers and mock tests is important for exam preparation. It puts your preparation to the test and also helps you identify areas that require more work. It will also give you a better idea of the question paper pattern and the kind of questions asked. You can also attempt to solve it within a particular time frame, this will improve your accuracy and time management when you finally take the test.

With these tips, you will be all set to take on the chemistry section of the JEE-Main. Preparing for a difficult entrance exam like the JEE-Main requires perseverance and commitment. However, at the same time, don’t forget to take care of yourself and take it one day at a time!
