What Is CGPA?

Among all the grading methods in universities, CGPA is the most used method. CGPA or the Cumulative Grade Points Average. Up to the higher secondary or senior secondary levels, students have to generally deal with their marks in terms of percentage. But, CGPA is different from percentage. However How To Calculate CGPA, nowadays most of the senior secondary educational boards are turning to this CGPA method.

How To Calculate CGPA?

Even though CGPA is so crucial thing, a huge count of students don’t know how to calculate CGPA till they are in the mid of their graduation. There is nothing big in calculating CGPA, all you have to remember the regular grade point distribution system.

Alright, if you have forgotten, let’s recall it. Marks lying in the range of 90-100 percent in a subject get you A1 or A+ grade with grade points equal to 10. Similarly, in the range of 80-90 percent, it is A2 or A with a grade points score of 9, and so on up to 33-40 percent.

Below 33 percent, the grade is F (F represents fail) with no grade points.

Now, you are well-versed in calculating the grade points, there is only a single step to do to calculate the CGPA. Just sum up all the grade points and divide it by the number of subjects, that’s it. The answer you got is nothing but your CGPA. How simple it is to calculate CGPA! Isn’t it?

How To Calculate SGPA?

The difference between CGPA and SGPA often messes with the minds of the students. Where CGPA stands for the Cumulative Grade Point Average, whereas, SGPA stands for the Semester Grade Point Average. Introduction to the SGPA method often takes place at your college or university where you have some credit-based subjects in your curriculum. To calculate the SGPA, here too, you have to evaluate the grade points of each subject. Now, after calculating the grade points, you have to calculate the credit points which is just the multiplication of grade points and credits.

Now, sum up all the credit points and divide the sum by the total number of credits. The answer you got is your SGPA.

If your university follows the choice-based subject system or credit-based system, there is another method for calculating CGPA of one year. Multiply the SGPA of the first semester with the total credits of that semester. Do the same for the second semester. Add up both the outputs and divide by the total number of credits of both semesters. The output you get is your CGPA of one year.

Calculation Of Percentile And Rank In Entrance Examinations

Before you get into a college or university, you have to pass through the entrance test which is most probably based on the percentile grading system to decide the rank of the candidates. For example, an entrance exam in which a total of 100000 students appeared. When we arrange these students in an array, the students above 50 percentile will be those with the rank ranging from 1 to 50000, whereas those below 50 percentile will be of rank 51000 to 100000. In a rough idea, if you are in the top 90 percentile, your rank will be in the top 10000 candidates.

After you have done calculating the percentile, use a simple formula and calculate your rank in an entrance exam.

Rank =((100- P)/100 x N)+1 where P represents your percentile and N represents the total number of students in the entrance exam.

How Can One Calculate Overall Percentage From CGPA And SGPA?

Despite knowing how to calculate CGPA from overall percentage, most of the students often scratch their heads in the vice-versa calculation. The conventional method of reverse calculation consumes much time. As an alternative, you can calculate your aggregate percentage from CGPA and SGPA by using this formula.

Marks(%) = (SGPA – 0.75)x 100   (calculation of % marks from SGPA)

Marks(%) = CGPA x 9.5               (calculation of % marks from CGPA)

Observe that, with the help of these formulae, you have got two new and easy formulae to calculate your CGPA and SGPA. Just arrange them like this-

SGPA= (Percentage Marks/100)+ 0.75   (alternative formula to calculate SGPA)

CGPA= Percentage Marks/ 9.5               (easier method to find out CGPA)
