Imagining a world without computer games is hard to imagine as we all are immersed in gaming. Right from children aged 8 to 10 to even adults in their late forties and fifties, the majority of us nowadays seem to be crazy about gaming. This is not anything unusual as people around the world like gaming, and online gaming is what most people go for. But things were not used to be like this as gaming consoles have come a long way from what we see currently.
Let me offer you a brief overview of how the things used to be in the early days of gaming and how they have evolved.
The Start of the Video Gaming and Launch of Video Gaming Console
Manufacturing and game development are one of the most profitable businesses and careers respectively since the early 1970s. Gaming consoles like Atari, Sega Mega Drive and Nintendo were the most popular ones during the early years. After that, Sony’s PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox from Microsoft made a killing and became insanely popular related to online gaming. Until the mid to late 1990s, there were just consoles and the available games on the cartridges with no other choice.
Some of the Best-Selling Consoles of Yesteryears
Atari 2600 is one of the most popular consoles in the history of video gaming. Many factors made this a great success story and one of the reasons that it was simple to set up and use. While they were consoles available in the market, it sold over 30 million units; it was an achievement at that time.
Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment Systems are one of the most popular consoles of all time. Specifically, the Game Boy has been a favorite in virtually every household worldwide. Nintendo Entertainment Systems and then Nintendo DS are renowned for some of the most loved games every one of us has played during our childhood. Even adults like to play hit games like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Fire Emblem, to name a few.
Compared to Atari and Nintendo, the first device was released PlayStation was released much later in 1994. But the consoles are one of the most popular and fastest-selling consoles in history and always give tough competition to its rivals. PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console in history with over 155 million consoles sold.
Xbox is owned by Microsoft and was released in 2001 but has since carved a niche for itself based on many features that are distinct in its consoles. Some of them are the use of applications, (games) streaming services and online services, to name a few. Xbox 360 is the best-selling unit, with over 84 million units sold.
The Advent of Online Gaming
Online gaming, in a way, was started as soon as the Internet was available commercially in the early 1990s. But the gaming consoles began the revolution in the real terms as everyone was at ease in playing the games without any interruption. With the console at their end, the gamers felt better and had a great gaming experience. But few problems started to arise, and even the consoles were not able to rectify them.
The problems that I mentioned above were related to the smooth experience of the gamers. The speed of the Internet depends upon the bandwidth, and that’s why not everywhere gamers can get the same speed. That’s one reason why the games lag and hang at the user end. But if the hosting or the gaming server is not up to the mark, then it will be the fault of the website. And the company offering the games may lose customers very quickly.
Why the Need for a Dedicated Server?
Website hosting on shared servers is one of the most common practices for small businesses and startups. This works fine for small blogs and websites with a few pages, but for large e-commerce ventures and shopping portals, this isn’t the right solution. In the same line, for companies offering state of the art gaming and tournaments among the participants, only a dedicated server would work.
A gaming dedicated server is almost a requirement for every website, regardless of the size and number of customers it has. As mentioned above, a dedicated server is not a luxury but a necessity that all the websites and services offering gaming must have. To accommodate more people, any other server can’t offer the flexibility and features that can make a company get its website going without any glitch.
Dedicated Servers All the Way
Gaming servers have evolved and how! From servers that provide the facility of to a few players, like 10-20 people at most. Now thousands of players can join in a game or log in simultaneously and play different games. There are many scenarios for which this is a requirement even for an experienced gamer. For example, complicated and complex game levels make it compulsory for a website to have a dedicated server helping its visitors, else they will not have a good time playing any game.
New innovations in the gameplay of any game make it difficult to play a game smoothly. For example, think about Grand Theft Auto, which uses complex gameplays. Great strategies and tactics need to be used by the gamer to go through the next level. He won’t be able to see how a game is being played out in front of him if it is not hated on a depicted server. A lag for a few seconds in such games can be the final nail in the coffin for any gamer.
Over to you
Video games are not what they used to be. Right from the latest consoles or the gaming events online, gamers have to be sharp and focused on what is going on in front of their screens; else it’s literally game over!
